New Jersey Gallery Announces Exhibit of World-Renowned Photographer John Kisch
Barnegat, NJ—Unshredded Nostalgia, New Jersey’s only metropolitan-style poster gallery, announces its next photography exhibit featuring the work of acclaimed photographer John Kisch. The exhibit entitled “The Roll Behind The Rock” will open to the public on Saturday, September 17 and run thru December 1, 2005.
John Kisch began his career in 1976 as a photographer’s assistant to some of the most famous names in media and advertising including Annie Lebowitz, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vogue, and the New York Times. From 1976-1987 he traveled throughout the world on tour with some of the world’s most famous musicians photographing their performances, including Lionel Hampton, Dizzie Gillespie, David Bowie, Hall & Oates, Hot Tuna and Cindy Lauper. While on the road he frequented antique shops, and auction houses where he began acquiring authentic film memorabilia for what would one day be known as The Separate Cinema Archive.
In 1980 he opened his own photography studio in New York where he shot commercial photos for magazines portraying the country’s most celebrated models, and celebrities including Christie Binkley, Janice Dickinson, Iman, Laurence Fishburne, and Kelly LeBrock.
By 1987 he had acquired several thousand Black cast posters and began providing traveling movie poster exhibits for museums, libraries and prestigious art institutions worldwide. In 1990, his collection was published in a book titled Separate Cinema: 50 Years of Black Cast Posters, the first book to present a history of posters that pays tribute to the Black presence in American filmmaking.
Today, The Separate Cinema is an institution, housing a private collection of African American film memorabilia which contains over 25,000 authentic movie posters and photographs that recount the historic journey of the Black film history.
“I have been working with John to exhibit his unique photographs for quite some time,” exclaims owner Jim Episale. “I’ve made a commitment to bringing those photographers whose work promises to be worth collecting; from both an investment and artistic perspective to our gallery.”
